Measurement of extracellular volume fraction by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging detects diffuse myocardial fibrosis in systemic sclerosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measured extracellular volume fraction (Ve) from preand post-contrast T1 maps of the left ventricle in 13 patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and 13 agematched controls. SSc patients and controls were similar with regard to LV and RV mass, volumes, and function. However, Ve was significantly higher in SSc patients than in controls, even when patients with visible late gadolinium enhancement were excluded. Ve correlated with SSc severity as measured by the modified Rodnan Skin Score. Ve may be valuable for detection of myocardial involvement in SSc, even when conventional CMR appears normal.

Evaluation of early myocardial damage in systemic sclerosis (SSc): a cardiovascular magnetic resonance study
Background Cardiac involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is mainly characterised by diffuse myocardial fibrosis and impairment of the microcirculation; even if clinically silent, it is increasingly recognized to be responsible for higher morbidity and mortality rate. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is the most accurate non-invasive method able to detect myocardial inflammation and fib...
متن کاملSystemic sclerosis: detection of early subclinical diffuse myocardial fibrosis and impaired left ventricular strain by cardiovascular magnetic resonance
Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by widespread tissue fibrosis including the myocardium. Diffuse myocardial fibrosis can be detected non-invasively by extracellular volume (ECV) imaging based on preand postcontrast T1 measurements using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). We hypothesized that multiparametric CMR, including T1 mapping, can detect subclinical myocardial i...
متن کاملAssessment of diffuse myocardial fibrosis in systemic sclerosis by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging
Background Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by excessive fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, including the heart. Traditional late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is dependent on differential (i.e., focal) fibrosis within the myocardium. However, diffuse interstitial myocardial fibrosis (DF) affecting th...
متن کاملSubclinical myocardial inflammation and diffuse fibrosis are common in systemic sclerosis – a clinical study using myocardial T1-mapping and extracellular volume quantification
BACKGROUND Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterised by multi-organ tissue fibrosis including the myocardium. Diffuse myocardial fibrosis can be detected non-invasively by T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) quantification, while focal myocardial inflammation and fibrosis may be detected by T2-weighted and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE), respectively, using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (C...
متن کاملCardiac T1 mapping in congenital heart disease: bolus versus infusion protocol for measurement of myocardial extracellular volume
Background Measurement of myocardial extracellular volume fraction (ECV) with T1 mapping cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) before and after the application of a gadolinium-based extracellular contrast agent enables the assessment of diffuse myocardial fibrosis. The equilibrium between blood and myocardium contrast concentration required for ECV measurements can be achieved with a primed contrast...
